‘Monorail’ reviewed in Vive le Rock – issue No.95 “… a Wonderful Album…”
Superb review of the Monorail Album by Bruce Turnbull. Featured in Vive le Rock issue No 95 (Sept 2022) alongside a special on the Ramones and the Rebellion festival. Here is what he has to say:
” Percy have been kicking around since 1996, peddling the kind of peculiar and noisy post-punk you don’t hear too much of these days. Percy are loud, abrasive and crude but the work shows a deep level of intelligence when it comes to storytelling. ‘Monorail’ itself is a strange beast, feeling almost like a lost Magazine album in places, with songs like ‘Midnight on Broadway’ utilising the same oozing organ sounds along with some aesthetics they’ve picked up from The Fall. This is quite varied in general, with the harder songs like ‘ICU’ rattling along at high clip, while the distorted ‘I’ve Been Down dips into the avant-garde. It appears somewhat aimless at first but it warrants repeated listens not unlike the time it takes to appreciate a PiL record. A weird, schizophrenic and sometimes wonderful album….” 7/10
